چکیده
INTRODUCTION The aim of this review was to describe the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the diagnosis and management of retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP) in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). MATERIALS AND METHODS We reviewed the tomographic characteristics of the eyes affected by RAP seen at our institution and imaged by OCT. Some eyes with RAP were also studied with OCT prior to and after laser treatment to determine the tomographic changes following laser photocoagulation. RESULTS In this preliminary report, OCT showed a typical pattern of structural changes in RAP: increased foveal thickness, cystoid macular oedema (CME) consisting of large central cysts and smaller cystoid spaces located mainly in the outer retinal layers, serous retinal detachment and a highly reflective intraretinal mass overlying a highly or moderately elevated retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). This mass corresponded to the hot spot observed on ICG angiography. After successful laser photocoagulation, significant decrease in foveal thickness, complete resolution of CME and retinal detachment with thinning of the neurosensory retina overlying the treated area could be observed. CONCLUSIONS OCT appears to be useful in evaluating and documenting RAP in AMD patients both before and after laser photocoagulation. Longitudinal studies are required to determine its exact place and utility in clinical practice.

Characteristic Findings of Optical Coherence Tomography in Retinal Angiomatous Proliferation
PURPOSE To identify the unique pathologic findings of retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP) in optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS Retrospectively, 29 eyes of 25 patients with age-related macular degeneration and complicated RAP were analyzed. All 29 eyes had choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in the area of pigment epithelial detachment (PED) or adjacent to it, which was visible wi...
متن کاملRetinal Ganglion Cell Complex in Alzheimer Disease: Comparing Ganglion Cell Complex and Central Macular Thickness in Alzheimer Disease and Healthy Subjects Using Spectral Domain-Optical Coherence Tomography
Introduction: Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia worldwide. The modalities to diagnose AD are generally expensive and limited. Both the central nervous system (CNS) and the retina are derived from the cranial neural crest; therefore, changes in retinal layers may reflect changes in the CNS tissue. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) machine can show delicate retinal layer...
متن کاملCorrelation between Visual Acuity and Optical Coherence Tomography-Measured Retinal Thickness in Diabetic Macular Edema
Background and Objective: Diabetic macular edema (DME) is one of the common complications of diabetes which significantly accounts for preventable visual impairment and blindness. Central macular thickness (CMT) is a feature found in DME patients. This study aims to determine the relationship between optical coherence tomography (OCT)-measured CMT and visual acuity (VA) in patients with DME bef...
متن کاملRetinal angiomatous proliferation associated with risk alleles of ARMS2/HTRA1 gene polymorphisms in Japanese patients
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between ARMS2/HTRA1, CFH, and C3 gene polymorphisms and retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP), an infrequent and severe form of exudative age-related macular degeneration, which is characterized by intraretinal neovascularization. METHODS Diagnosis of RAP was based on fundus photographs, images of fluorescein and indocy...
متن کاملRETINAL ANGIOMATOUS PROLIFERATION DIAGNOSIS: A Multiimaging Approach.
PURPOSE To identify signs occurring more frequently in retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP) lesions compared with other types of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in age-related macular degeneration. METHODS In this cross-sectional retrospective study, 30 patients were evaluated. These signs were correlated with the type of CNV: shunting of blood flow to the lesion by fluorescein angiogra...
